My principals have district-provided iPads that they use for teacher evaluations among other things. District-provided iPads are definitely a new thing for the district, and they are the first real non-Windows end user computer/device that I need to fully support. I had to come up with a sort of policy-or-somethin’-somethin’ so that I could feel like I had some reign over the iPads concerning what they can and can not do. Here’s the plan:
* Users must “log in” still. Every day, when the principal goes to use his iPad and he wants to surf the interweb or use an app that needs the interweb, he must first log in with his Windows account via Safari on the iPad to authenticate with the firewall to basically say “Hey, yeah, it’s me, the principal, and I’m using my iPad today.”
* All district-provided iPads must use the same Apple ID. I created a district Apple ID and gave them the account info. They are free to use the App Store to download whatever free apps they want. If they want a costly app, they can opt to purchase an iTunes gift card from Walmart or ask me to do so. I didn’t tie a credit card to the district account.
* They CAN change the Apple ID and use their personal Apple ID if they want. I gave instructions on how to do this, but I don’t support anything they do for personal purposes.
* Turned off iCloud and asked them to never turn it on.
* Turned on some Restrictions and asked them to never turn them on.
* Asked them to never update/upgrade the iPad. The Tech Dept will take care of this.
* They set a Passcode for security sake.
